Scientists have created a guanidinium sulfate salt that can capture and store carbon dioxide at ambient pressures and temperatures with little energy input. The strategy could change the way the industry captures, transports and stores gas. An international team of scientists filled the aqueous solution of Gua2 Sat4 with carbon dioxide and saw how a monocrystalline clathrate salt based on guanidinium sulfate forms under ambient conditions. Because the solution trapped the carbon dioxide without forming strong bonds with the gas, the researchers were able to simply reverse the process to release the gas again.
