Irish favourites like popcorn, corn on the cob and whisky may soon fall victim to the stress of the climate crisis. That's because new NASA research has found that rising greenhouse gas emissions could affect corn and wheat production as early as 2030. And since Ireland imports up to 80 percent of what we eat except for meat and dairy, this could have a major impact on food security. NASA projections suggest that global corn (maize) yields could drop by as much as 24 percent by the end of this century. Wheat production is expected to increase by 17 percent, but they also found that rising temperatures and the resulting faster growth rate could affect its nutritional value, with any yields expected to plateau by 2050.
