The Thwaites Glacier has the potential to be a disaster for coastal communities around the world, as scientists have a fresh and disturbing update for us. West Antarctica is home to a huge sheet of floating ice – about the size of Great Britain – that is rapidly receding. According to a new study, Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, glaciologists from California University of Irvine found that the warm water beneath the surface of the glacier causes the melting rate to increase faster.
