Based on an assessment of 26 negative tipping points in the Earth system, the report says "business as usual" is no longer possible - with rapid changes in nature and society already underway and more to come.
The most comprehensive assessment of tipping points ever undertaken, The Global Tipping Points Report, was produced by an international team of over 200 researchers, including experts from Cardiff University, and coordinated by the University of Exeter in partnership with the Bezos Earth Fund.
The authors argue that the current global report falls short of the scale of the challenges of phasing out fossil fuels and growing zero-carbon solutions, offering six key recommendations for a swift change of course:
- Phase out fossil fuels and land use emissions now and stop them before 2050
- Strengthen adaptation and management of "loss and damage", recognizing inequality between and within nations
- Include tipping points in the world's climate "inventory" A global overview and nationally determined contributions that measure each country's efforts to combat climate change
- Coordinate political efforts to trigger positive tipping points
- Convene an urgent global tipping point summit
- Research team supports calls for an IPCC special report on tipping points to advance knowledge and understanding
