Capturing and storing the carbon dioxide that humans produce is key to reducing atmospheric greenhouse gases and slowing global warming, but today's carbon capture technologies only work well for concentrated sources of carbon, such as exhaust from power plants. The same methods cannot effectively capture carbon dioxide from the surrounding air, where concentrations are hundreds of times lower than in flue gas.
Still, direct air capture or DAC is counted on to reverse the rise in CO levels 2 , which reached 426 parts per million (ppm), which is 50 % more than before the industrial revolution. Without it, according to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, we will not achieve humanity's goal of limiting warming to 1.5 °C (2.7 °F) above current global averages.
