Earth has just experienced 12 months of global temperatures above an important climate threshold

The first month of 2024 was the warmest January on record, climate scientists from the European Union said on Thursday. in a continuation of the terrible streak of record global temperatures after 2023 was confirmed as the hottest year on record. Twelve months of global temperatures being 1.5 degrees above pre-industrial levels does not necessarily mean that the Paris climate agreement has failed, as the target is for longer-term temperatures spanning several decades. But it is likely to raise alarm bells, as scientists have warned that more urgent action is needed to ensure the Paris Agreement’s goals are met.
