As we look to 2024 and beyond, the construction industry may need to turn to a more holistic approach and provide strategies for social and governance issues.

Sustainable construction: Environmental issues

The development of sustainable construction practices and strategies to achieve net zero has been increasingly in the spotlight in recent years – both in terms of the carbon costs of construction and throughout the development life cycle. However, legal commitments and specific proposals for reducing carbon emissions (what can be called "climate clauses") have still not been adopted en masse in the industry's contracts. We expect to see a legal shift in the coming years towards creating a stronger contractual environment to hold parties in the sector accountable for their climate commitments on projects as we move ever closer to the Government's Net-Zero deadlines.
