Climate change can be demoralizing. For years, scientists have carefully documented how the Earth is warming faster and faster. One infamous climate record follows another; The year 2023 was by far the warmest year since measurements began. The consequences can be felt as extreme weather events around the world. Meanwhile, global greenhouse gas emissions continue to rise, while effective international climate policy action is still lacking. News about climate change in the media consists primarily of information about its extent and dangers, with a focus on extreme events, disasters and records. Negative news is scary and depressing. People's reactions to it are different. Some are indifferent, some turn away, some doubt. There are also more and more people who are seriously worried about their future or the future of their children. This is known as climate anxiety or ecological anxiety. (Cyril Brunner, ETH Zurich)
