In 2023, ChatGPT has broken into many professional tools. But while this AI involves massive energy consumption, OpenAI, the company responsible, is increasingly unclear about the CO2 emissions associated with it. As a result, other AI giants are limiting their communication. The number of users, the computing power required, the location of data centers… Confusion is brewing as the carbon footprint of digital technologies explodes. The use of artificial intelligence is exploding with the emergence of generative technologies such as Midjourney, which creates images on demand, or ChatGPT, which is capable of conversation. The latter is slipping everywhere. Since March 2023, it has been integrated as a chatbot – a conversational agent – in the Bing search engine and can connect to many tools such as Microsoft Teams and professional messaging Slack. Data centers must therefore increase their activity. "Tens of thousands of models are deployed in parallel so that users don't have to wait when they ask a question." ,” Sasha Lucioni, a specialist in the carbon impact of AI at startup, explains to Novethic. But the sector as a whole prefers to keep the topic under wraps, as evidenced by the lack of mention of the environmental impacts of AI at the first global summit on the risks of AI, held in the UK last November. But some of the CO2 emissions estimates are staggering.
