The so-called “historic” outcome of COP28 fails to deliver the most basic and necessary measures that would prevent the collapse of society and “Earth systems” as outlined by the IPCC: eliminating fossil fuel subsidies and halting all new oil and gas projects. Instead, the new resolution contains numerous loopholes that will allow polluters to remove emissions environmentally through fictitious carbon capture, meaningless carbon credits, and the reclassification of methane (“natural gas”) as a transitional fuel.
