The current report on the state of the environment is based primarily on data from the past year. These show that Slovakia is on track to achieve several goals set for 2030. We are already meeting the goal of increasing the share of land used for organic farming. This was set for 2030 at 13.5 % of the total area of agricultural land. Efforts to reduce emissions of pollutants into the air have been successful in the long term. For most pollutants, Slovakia meets the binding values set for the period from 2020 to 2029. The high rate of packaging recycling and the long-term decline in electricity production in thermal power plants and the increase in the share of energy produced from renewable sources are also positive.

The Achilles heel of the environment remains air quality, the slow pace of removing environmental burdens or building water infrastructure, especially the low rate of connection of local governments to public sewers. In 1993, 4 million 138 thousand inhabitants were supplied with water from the public water supply system, i.e. 77.8 % of the population. In 2022, this number increased to over 4 million 900 thousand inhabitants, which represented 90.27 % of the total population of our country. However, Slovakia lags significantly behind the European standard in wastewater disposal through public sewers. While in 1993, 51.5 % of the population lived in houses connected to public sewers, in 2022 the level of connection of the population to public sewers reached only 71 %.
