These messages can start to trigger deja-vu. We do some things to fight climate change, usually more than the year before. But not fast enough to prevent some pretty terrifying destruction. "Record broken," is the title of the latest UN report on emissions shortfalls. "Temperatures hit new highs, but world fails (again) to cut emissions," subtitle. So far so gloomy. But the record may soon be broken, as some analysts predict emissions will peak in 2023. From Cop29, we could read reports that this time the world has finally succeeded in reducing emissions – and not because the global economy has been brought to a standstill by the pandemic. From then on, we will harm our planet less and less each year until we reach net zero and stop harming it at all. It's still a matter of how quickly we reach that point and how much damage we do.(Joe Lo)
