World faces 'hellish' 3C climate warming, warns UN ahead of Cop28

The world is on track for an "infernal" 3C of global warming, the UN has warned ahead of the key Cop28 climate summit starting next week in the United Arab Emirates. The report found that today's carbon reduction policies are so inadequate that 3°C of warming would be achieved this century. Temperature records have already been obliterated by 2023, and intensifying heat waves, floods and droughts have claimed lives and affected livelihoods around the world in response to the 1.4°C temperature rise to date. Scientists say it will get much worse if temperatures continue to rise. UN Secretary-General António Guterres has repeatedly said that the world is headed for a "hell" future. A report by the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP) states that the implementation of future policies already promised by countries would reduce 0.1 C of the 3 C limit. The introduction of emission reductions promised by developing countries on the condition of obtaining financial and technical support, would reduce the temperature rise to 2.5°C, which is still a catastrophic scenario.
