International Climate and Energy Summit in Madrid strengthens efforts to achieve 1.5°C target

Ministers from around the world are attending a high-level event co-hosted by Spain and the IEA to strengthen ambition and implementation ahead of COP28 in Dubai. Ministers and senior officials from nearly 40 countries around the world joined leaders of international organizations and representatives of industry, civil society and youth organizations in Madrid on Monday for the International Climate and Energy Summit.  summit The summit, co-organised by the Spanish government, which currently holds the presidency of the European Union, and the International Energy Agency, sought to build a broad coalition behind efforts to keep the Paris Agreement's goal of limiting global warming to 1.5°C within reach. The summit, co-chaired by Spanish Prime Minister Teresa Ribera and IEA Executive Director Fatih Birol, opened with statements from UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres and COP28 President-designate Sultan Al Jaber, and aimed to strengthen support for measures to increase clean energy and reduce demand for fossil fuels ahead of the UN Climate Change Conference (COP28) to meet the commitments of the Paris Agreement.
