Why we should approach migration like climate change

The continued influx of refugees is neither a temporary problem nor one that can be easily contained. That is why we must tell our citizens the truth: Europe is destined to become a major reception centre. Once we understand this, we can find ways to turn this influx of people into an advantage. Wouldn't it be more honest with our fellow citizens (and therefore with the governments concerned with European citizens) to tell the truth about the immigration emergency? That is, it is an insoluble phenomenon and that all the proposed therapies to prevent or discourage landings (which are used by a minority of those who "illegally" arrive in Italy and Europe, taking great risks) are destined to leave more or not things as they are. Also because democracy has to deal with public opinion, which ranges from requests for naval blockades and firing cannons to stop the sailing of the damned to the emotions and criticism of the government's inertia when (see the Cutro case) there is a shipwreck and the waves wash the body of a child ashore.  If we may make a bold comparison, immigration is like climate change. We may face this next emergency in a few decades, but we need to turn on the air conditioners immediately (and not for a short time). The same is true for immigration. (Giuliano Cazzola).
