Telecommuting can reduce your carbon footprint if done right

According to a new study by Cornell University and Microsoft, remote workers may have a 54 % lower carbon footprint compared to on-site workers, with lifestyle choices and work arrangements playing a major role in determining the environmental benefits of remote and hybrid work. A study published in journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences also found that hybrid workers who work from house two to four days a week, they can reduce their carbon footprint by 11 % to 29 %, but working from home one day a week is more negligible, reducing their carbon footprint by only 2 %. "Remote work is not zero-carbon, and the benefits of hybrid work are not perfectly linear," said study lead author Fengqi You, professor of engineering energy systems at Cornell. "Everyone knows that you save money without commuting energy for transportation , but there is always an influence on lifestyle and many other factors." (Cornell University)
