The past few months have been a turbulent time to be an oceanographer, especially one who specializes in the vast Southern Ocean around Antarctica and its role in our climate. The media has been awash with stories about the Northern Hemisphere’s sea-heat, the potential collapse of the Atlantic meridional circulation by mid-century, and the record Antarctic sea ice deficit that has emerged this southern winter. Alongside heat waves and fires in North America and southern Europe, flooding in China, and winter temperatures in South America exceeding 38°C, climate has moved from a “future issue” to a “now issue” in many people’s minds.
