As our climate changes, weather becomes more extreme. The European Environment Agency is looking at what could happen this summer; the impact of past weather events; what can we expect in the long term; and how prepared we are as a society. Weather and climate-related extremes caused economic losses estimated at EUR 560 billion in the EU between 1980 and 2021, of which only EUR 170 billion was insured (30 %). Floods, storms, heat and cold waves, forest fires and landslides claimed nearly 195,000 lives.
