Protected forests offset annual global fossil fuel emissions

The research team from University of Maryland , Northern Arizona University, University of Arizona and other institutions demonstrated the critical role of protected forests in mitigating climate change.  According to the study, protected forests store an additional 9.65 billion metric tons of carbon in their above-ground biomass compared to ecologically similar regions that are not protected.
