The European Commission and the High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Josep Borrell, have adopted a new comprehensive strategy to address the threats that climate change and environmental degradation could pose to the areas of peace, security and defence. And a press release published by the European Commission on its official website linked climate phenomena to rising temperatures and sea levels, desertification, water scarcity, threats to biodiversity and environmental pollution. The statement warns that pollution in general threatens the health and well-being of humanity and can lead to further displacement, migratory movements and the spread of epidemics, social unrest, instability and even conflict.
