How the EU is working to reduce greenhouse gas emissions other than CO2.

The EU is working to reduce CO2 emissions while also trying to regulate other greenhouse gases that warm the planet, such as methane, fluorinated gases (also known as F-gases) and ozone-depleting substances. They are present in the atmosphere in smaller quantities than CO2 but can have a significant warming effect. MEPs call for an ambitious reduction in emissions of fluorinated greenhouse gases and ozone-depleting substances. They support the Commission’s proposal to increase the use of alternatives to fluorinated greenhouse gases and ozone-depleting substances where possible, or to introduce measures to reduce their leakage and emissions during production or use. Parliament adopted its position on reducing emissions of fluorinated gases and ozone-depleting substances during its March 2023 plenary session and is ready to negotiate with EU governments.
