Heat wave 2023 – a warning for the future

As climate change continues, global average sea surface temperatures (SST) will continue to increase. This has significant consequences for marine ecosystems and can exacerbate extreme weather. A warmer atmosphere can hold more moisture, about 7 % for every 1°C of warming, and warmer waters in turn provide more energy for storms and can contribute to extreme rainfall and cyclones. Recent extreme rainfall, storms and above-average temperatures in Ireland could be linked to increased sea surface temperatures and the offshore heatwave experienced in June 2023.
