Nand the edge Niamey, the capital of Niger, looks as if the countryside has moved into the city. Clusters of domed wooden huts have sprung up. Cows and goats are tethered in the shade. Waves of rural people have arrived, largely due to climate change. “The seasons are not as good as they used to be. It’s hotter and the rains often fail,” says Ganso Seyni Ali, the head of a group of herders from rural Niger. He has moved to the city permanently with half of his native village – more than 150 families. (CAIRO, CHATTOGRAM AND NIAMEY, Economist)
