The average global temperature has increased significantly since the Industrial Revolution. The period from 2010 to 2020 was the warmest decade on record. Of the 20 warmest years, 17 have been since 2000. According to data from the Copernicus climate change monitoring programme, 2022 was the warmest year on record for Europe. Most evidence suggests that this was caused by increased greenhouse gas emissions from human activities. The average global temperature is now 0.944 to 1.20°C higher than at the end of the 19th century. Scientists estimate that the increase in 2°C compared to pre-industrial levels beyond a threshold with dangerous and catastrophic consequences for the climate and the environment. Therefore, the international community agrees that global warming must be kept well below 2°C.
