Agriculture is a fundamental pillar of the European economy, with farmland covering 38 % of the EU's total land area. The sector is responsible for 11 % of greenhouse gas emissions in the EU, but it also has a unique capacity to sequester carbon from the atmosphere, so there is a large potential for climate action. With this in mind, the European Commission has commissioned an exploratory study on ways to price agricultural emissions (notably through a new and separate emissions trading scheme) and how to reward carbon removal in the land sector. The preliminary results of this study were discussed at a public stakeholder workshop on 14 June.
