According to the EU's Joint Research Centre for Science and Knowledge, a forest area larger than the combined area of Germany, France and Spain would be needed to fully grow to offset one year of global carbon dioxide emissions. Forests naturally absorb atmospheric carbon dioxide and store it in their biomass, and together with strong emission reductions, they play a major role in international policy frameworks such as the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change, the Paris Agreement and the EU's European Green Deal.
