Research examines forest conservation and efforts to mitigate climate change

Research published in the journal Nature Communications quantified the ability of protected forests to stabilize the Earth's climate. Research findings confirm the importance of protecting forests with high biomass. The study found that protected forests store nearly 10 billion metric tons more carbon than similar unprotected forests. Protecting forests is key to mitigating climate change, and industries are now realizing the importance of protecting nature in achieving net zero goals. The research team used aboveground carbon estimates from NASA's Global Ecosystem Dynamics Investigation, the first satellite system specifically designed to map forest structure, to quantify the carbon efficiency of protected areas.
