In Germany, police and prosecutors launched their first nationwide crackdown on the Last Generation group on May 24th with raids. The climate activists are accused of "founding or supporting a criminal organization" in Munich, leading to house searches and the shutdown of their website. Four days earlier, Last Generation activists in Italy staged a protest that drew attention when they poured a black liquid, charcoal diluted with water, into the Trevi Fountain in Rome. Their banner called for "an immediate end to public subsidies for all fossil fuels." Michele, a member of Last Generation Italy, said it was a symbolic act. "Black carbon represents fossil fuels that pollute the water," she told DW.
