Decarbonisation and Net Zero are paths, not projects. AVK's Ben Pritchard maps the way, calls HVO, on-site generation and microgrids. Battery storage systems, hydrogen, carbon capture and storage, underwater data centers, even small modular nuclear reactors. Hardly a week goes by without the announcement of a new esoteric project aimed at making data centers more sustainable. However, such laudable initiatives have probably consumed more carbon than they have saved so far. Not only do they each have flaws; even if they don't, almost all are years or decades away from potential adoption. However, data center operators are demanding solutions now, if not to decarbonize completely (which is currently an unachievable goal), then to take further steps towards decarbonization in affordable, achievable and effective ways. After all, data centers and other critical equipment typically have years of investment in their existing infrastructure that cannot be written off overnight. One of the most intractable challenges today is power backup – the infrastructure that data centers in particular need to continue operations when the grid power fails. And while natural gas provides an increasingly popular alternative—especially for building highly resilient microgrids—diesel remains the backbone of backup around the world and will for some time to come.
