The G7 countries have pledged to accelerate the phase-out of fossil fuels and the transition to renewable energy sources, the Financial Times reports. The agreement was reached yesterday in the northern Japanese city of Sapporo after „weeks of strenuous negotiations“ between the world’s seven most advanced economies. The summit’s final communiqué pledged to „accelerate the phase-out of fossil fuels without reducing emissions, so as to achieve net-zero emissions in energy systems by 2050.“ It adds: „In previous proposals, Japan opposed the addition of the phrase [phase-out], but the UK, Germany and France successfully negotiated its inclusion.“ ((Kana Inagaki, David Sheppard and Andy Bounds, Financial Times)
