According to the IEA, energy-related carbon dioxide emissions rose by 0.9 % last year to a record 36.8 billion tons. And this despite the fact that more clean technologies have helped limit the consequences of increased coal and oil consumption.

• Emissions from coal increased by 1.6 %, since many countries have turned to this fuel, which is considered one of the most polluting, after the Russian invasion of Ukraine and the reduction of Russian gas supplies to Europe.
• Oil emissions increased by 2.5 %, however, they remained below the pre-pandemic level. Half of the increase was due to an increase in air traffic, which recovered from the pandemic low.
• Lower electricity production from nuclear power plants and extreme weather events, including heatwaves, also contributed to the increase in energy-related emissions.
• Total emissions were partly offset by the increase in renewable sources such as wind and solar power, energy efficiency measures and electric cars. Thanks to this, another 550 million tons of emissions were prevented.
