How to build climate resilience and close the climate gap: conclusions from the Climate Resilience Dialogue

Average global temperatures continue to rise above all meteorological records. Extreme weather events and the long-term effects of climate change are increasingly affecting people, businesses, economies and infrastructure in general. In the EU, only about a quarter of climate-related damages were insured in the past, although the size and specifics of this gap in climate protection vary across Member States. Climate change may widen the gap between economic losses and insurance losses due to materialization of climate-related risks.

The European Commission convened a dialogue on climate resilience in November 2021 to facilitate an open exchange of information on ways to address climate protection gaps and increase climate resilience in the EU with a focus on climate change adaptation. The dialogue brought together stakeholders such as public authorities including regulators, consumer organizations and the insurance industry. (More on climate.ec.europa.eu)
