People spent the last century luxuriating in the gains of the second industrial revolution. They drove gasoline cars and bought cheap goods mass-produced in coal-burning factories. All this activity released greenhouse gases that filled the atmosphere. These gases raised the heat to unprecedented levels. The ten warmest recorded years were from 2010. Older generations have already experienced the impact of climate change. In 2021, there were devastating floods in Australia, Europe, Asia, and the northeastern United States. California burned and crippling freezing temperatures paralyzed Texas. As the climate grows, these events and their risks will only increase. Previous generations were content to burn more and more fossil fuels, and now future generations will experience ever hotter and longer heat waves, intensifying droughts and increasingly destructive floods. While they enjoyed the luxury, they left their offspring with the burden.
