Why do so many of us keep pretending it isn&#039;t?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Climate-induced disaster is now headline news as record floods, fires, droughts and storms keep coming. The damage caused by climate change is systemic and pervasive, resonating in our communities, economies and environments. It manifests itself in many ways, from empty spaces on supermarket shelves to homes left uninhabitable by floods, anxious communities, collapsing ecosystems and emergency services. Climate scientists initially assumed that if you give people the right information, we will act on it. Burning fossil fuels has serious consequences - so let&#039;s phase out fossil fuels. However, they found out very quickly that this was not the case. For many people, this triggered cognitive dissonance, where they knew climate change was happening but acted as if it wasn&#039;t. Many people still smoke, even though they know that it is harmful to their health. And many of us still fly to Italy - even though we know how many tons of extra carbon dioxide we&#039;re putting into the atmosphere.
