Retrofitting existing infrastructure is cleaner and has multiple benefits. We are witnessing high levels of carbon emissions, high energy consumption and the effects of climate change on people and other inhabitants of the built environment. The construction industry is focused on building new buildings, but retrofitting instead of demolishing existing buildings would drastically reduce the economic and environmental cost we currently pay. <span>Scientists Dr. Judy Bush, Professor Sarah Bell and Enzo Lara-Hamilton from\u00a0<\/span><span>Melbourne Centre for Cities<\/span><span>\u00a0at the University of Melbourne\u00a0<\/span><span>recently published a problematic document<\/span><span>\u00a0\u201cRetrofitting for Cities: Challenges and Opportunities in Australia\u201d to highlight the challenges and outline potential solutions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Here are five ways they say retrofitting provides a blueprint for the sustainable development of Australian cities.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>1.
