The Europe of the Regions draws a map that confirms the trend of recent years and, indirectly, climate change. Between 1992 and 2022, over thirty years, the average number of heating degree days in the EU had a clear downward trend. At the beginning of this period, it was 3,209 heating degree days per year. Three decades later, in 2022, this number had fallen to 2,858 (a decrease of 11 %), according to Eurostat data. The decline in heating needs is partly related to rising global temperatures, partly to new insulation materials and building renovation. As Europe aims for zero-emission buildings by 2050, heating is one of the indicators in the spotlight, even more so with radiators being turned on these days in various Italian cities, from north to south, after last winter when prices reached record levels.
