How can we reduce their carbon footprint?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>33 percent of the world&#039;s population owns a pet: how do we calculate its carbon footprint and what can we do to reduce it? <span>At the FT Business of Luxury Summit in May 2023, Patrick Hanson claimed that one of his customers produced an average of 2.1 tonnes of CO2 per year, the same as owning three dogs. <\/span><span>His estimate came via the 2020 Carbon Footprint Calculator created by Mike Berners Lee. <\/span><span>The environmental organization Greenpeace estimates that\u00a0<\/span><strong><span>private jets<\/span><\/strong><span> emitted a total of 5.3 million tons of CO2 over the past three years, with the number of flights skyrocketing from nearly 119,000 in 2020 to 573,000 in 2022.\u00a0<\/span><span>There is also great variability in ownership\u00a0<\/span><strong><span>pets<\/span><\/strong><span> , making comparisons of private jets like the Hanson unreliable.\u00a0<\/span><span>But it is true that the number of households that own pets is growing year by year. In 2023, 66 percent of American households had a pet: a 10 percent jump in 35 years from 56 percent in 1988.
