While everyone is familiar with the term carbon footprint, which now applies to various topics with an environmental impact on the planet, until now no tool has allowed us to calculate the footprint of "invisible" running water consumption or "virtual". This is thanks to researchers who have designed this "water footprint" calculator, useful for individuals, businesses, communities or countries.<\/p>\n

How is the carbon footprint of water calculated?\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

In addition to raising awareness about water waste, the network offers\u00a0Water Footprint Network<\/em>\u00a0 a method for calculating the water footprint, taking into account three different types of water: blue water, green water and grey water. Blue water is the best known because it includes domestic, agricultural, energy and industrial uses. It is what we wash with, eat with or grow plants with. The lesser-known green water refers to water that comes from soil and plants. According to INRAE, it represents 60 % of precipitation (compared to 40 % for blue water). It therefore includes rainwater and is one of the nine planetary boundaries that must be monitored. Grey water refers to wastewater , processed in wastewater treatment plants.
