The days are getting shorter, the temperature is cooler and the leaves are changing color. <\/span><span>The delayed onset of autumn in 2023 is not unique. It&#039;s actually part of a wider trend where the transition from summer to winter takes place later in the year. Mine\u00a0<\/span><span>own research<\/span><span> , which I have conducted over the past 13 years, points to climate change as the likely culprit.\u00a0<\/span><span>One of the most striking effects of climate change is the changing seasonality patterns of the vegetation around us. This includes the timing of important biological events such as bud break, first leaf emergence, flowering and leaf fall. <\/span><span>In general, the appearance of the first leaf indicates the arrival of spring, while the fall of the leaves signals the beginning of autumn. The timing of these events varies, especially in the Northern Hemisphere where spring appears to be beginning.
