Scientists from\u00a0<\/span><span>British Antarctic Survey <\/span><span>\u00a0The authors of the new study warned that humanity has \u201clost control\u201d over the fate of ice shelves, these gigantic frozen structures floating on the edge of the main ice sheet that play a stabilizing role in slowing the drift and melting of glaciers in the ocean. Antarctica has already seen accelerated ice loss in recent decades, and scientists said the West Antarctic Ice Sheet, which contains enough water to raise sea levels by several meters, could be approaching a climate \u201ctipping point.\u201d The scientists found (using computer modeling) that faster melting of ice shelves is already inevitable in the coming decades due to warming oceans.
