A large majority of Europeans believe climate change is a serious problem facing the world, according to a new Eurobarometer survey published today (93 %) . More than half think that the transition to a green economy should be accelerated (58 %) given the sharp rise in energy prices and concerns about gas supplies following the Russian invasion of Ukraine. From an economic point of view, 73 % Europeans agree that the costs of damage caused by climate change are much higher than the investments needed for an ecological transition. And three quarters (75 %) of Europeans agree that taking climate action will lead to innovation. Promoting emission reductions, renewables and energy efficiency Almost nine out of ten EU citizens (88 %) agree that greenhouse gas emissions should be reduced to a minimum while offsetting remaining emissions to make the EU climate neutral by 2050. Almost nine out of ten Europeans (87 %) think it is important for the EU to set ambitious targets to increase use of energy from renewable sources, and a similar number (85 %) believe it is important for the EU to take measures to improve energy efficiency, for example by encouraging people to insulate their homes, install solar panels or buy electric cars.
