But it is a pricing tool that is also available in the private sector for voluntary carbon reductions.\u00a0 <\/span><span>There is no single price that emitters should pay for each ton of CO2 they release into the atmosphere; it depends on various factors and the specific type of mechanism they are pursuing.\u00a0 <\/span><span>The primary carbon pricing mechanisms are the carbon tax and the Emissions Trading System (ETS), also known as cap and trade. Other mechanisms include\u00a0<\/span><span>internal carbon pricing<\/span><span> , results-based climate finance (RBCF) and carbon offsets.\u00a0 <\/span><span>Carbon\u00a0<\/span><span>tax<\/span><span>\u00a0is a fixed price that emitters must pay for their carbon emissions, which usually increases over time. It works like\u00a0<\/span><i><span>tax for sin<\/span><\/i><span> , in which an increase in the carbon tax discourages emitters from polluting more.\u00a0<\/span><span>On the other hand, the government allows the entity to emit a limited amount of carbon by issuing emission allowances. Each carbon quota, also called\u00a0<\/span><span>carbon credit<\/span><span> or carbon certificate, gives the holder the right to emit one ton of CO2.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><span>Limiting the number of quotas also means limiting the total emissions of a company or industry.
