In practice, emissions have been steadily increasing, only showing a decline in line with economic crises, as in the case of the global financial crisis in 2009 and the Covid crisis in 2020. <\/span><span>The rapid development of emerging economies plays a dominant role. The BRICS countries \u2013 Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa \u2013 account for 45 % of global emissions, two thirds of which are produced by China alone. This is not an entirely new phenomenon: even in cumulative terms, BRICS emissions from 1970 to the present represent a third of the global total.
