Governments are pushing consumers to invest in cleaner, electric-powered vehicles to reduce the environmental impact of our roads. And carmakers are fighting for our attention (and our money) with new technologies to get us to invest in their latest electric vehicle models. <span>Electric cars are not the solution. <\/span><span>Technology companies offer to gradually replace vehicles equipped with internal combustion engines, which are considered too polluting, with electric vehicles, which have a much lower carbon footprint. <\/span><span>However, lower does not mean zero either. <\/span><span>It is true that fully electric vehicles do not emit waste products, but the batteries that power the vehicle are made from minerals such as lithium and cobalt, which have an impact on climate change. <\/span><span>\u201cTo create an electric car, a lot of minerals need to be mined, and a lot of that will continue to happen in the global south. And these mines have an incredible impact on the environment and health in the places where they exist,&quot; explained Marx.
