{"id":7275,"date":"2023-09-08T20:21:05","date_gmt":"2023-09-08T18:21:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.co2news.sk\/?p=7275"},"modified":"2023-09-08T20:21:05","modified_gmt":"2023-09-08T18:21:05","slug":"the-un-says-that-action-is-needed-on-all-fronts-to-meet-climate-goals","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.co2news.sk\/en\/2023\/09\/08\/the-un-says-that-action-is-needed-on-all-fronts-to-meet-climate-goals\/","title":{"rendered":"The UN says action is needed &quot;on all fronts&quot; to meet climate goals."},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span>The world is not on target to limit global warming and more action is needed on all fronts, the United Nations warned on Friday ahead of key international talks aimed at halting the growing climate crisis.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>A message<\/span><span>\u00a0The Global Stocktake , the UN&#039;s latest warning of environmental risks, will form the basis of the COP28 talks in Dubai at the end of the year and will follow months of terrifying fires and soaring temperatures.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The UN report, which culminates a two-year assessment of the goals of the 2015 Paris climate agreement, includes thousands of contributions from experts, governments and activists.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cThe Paris Agreement has spurred near-universal climate action by setting targets and sending signals to the world about the urgency of responding to the climate crisis,\u201d the report says. \u201cWhile action is underway, much more is now needed on all fronts.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The UN report also calls on governments to expand renewable energy sources and phase out all &quot;unlimited&quot; fossil fuels, adding that both are &quot;essential&quot; for the clean energy transition.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Nearly 200 countries agreed in Paris in 2015 to limit warming to a maximum of 2 degrees Celsius compared to pre-industrial levels and to strive to keep the increase to 1.5 degrees Celsius.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>While each country is responsible for deciding on its own climate action, it has also agreed to submit a progress report by 2023 to see what more needs to be done. More than 130 countries have submitted their contributions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The UN said existing national pledges to cut emissions were not enough to keep temperatures below 1.5\u00b0C. More than 20 gigatonnes of additional CO2 reductions were needed this decade to meet the targets \u2013 and global net zero by 2050 \u2013 the UN assessment said.
