This unreliability of the mechanism generates an amount of "junk credits" equal to Japan's annual emissions. These are emission reduction certificates that are no longer bought on the voluntary carbon market, as they are considered a classic "bundle". Many of the world's largest companies have used carbon credits sold on the unregulated voluntary market (there is also a regulated one), which will grow to $2 billion in 2021 and $20 per ton of CO2 equivalent.
