In some areas, rising temperatures are increasing the frequency and likelihood of\u00a0<\/span><span>fires and drought<\/span><span>\u00a0In others they do <\/span><span>downpours<\/span><span>\u00a0a\u00a0<\/span><span>storms<\/span><span> intensify or accelerate the rate of glacier melting.\u00a0<\/span><span>Last month is a clear example of this.\u00a0<\/span><span>Parts of Europe<\/span><span>\u00a0a\u00a0<\/span><span>Canada<\/span><span> are being destroyed by forest fires, while Beijing has recorded <\/span><span>heaviest rainfall<\/span><span>\u00a0over the past 140 years. Looking back, between 2000 and 2019, the world&#039;s glaciers lost approximately\u00a0<\/span><span>267 gigatons of ice<\/span><span>\u00a0annually. Melting glaciers contribute to rising sea levels (currently rising by about\u00a0<\/span><span>3.3 mm per year<\/span><span> ) and other coastal risks such as flooding and erosion.
