The sector is responsible for 11 % of greenhouse gas emissions in the EU, but it also has a unique capacity to sequester carbon from the atmosphere, so there is a large potential for climate action. With this in mind, the European Commission has commissioned an exploratory study on ways to price agricultural emissions (notably through a new and separate emissions trading scheme) and how to reward carbon removal in the land sector.
