The ocean absorbs about one-third of all CO\u00a0<sub>2<\/sub> human-induced, causing a change in seawater chemistry called ocean acidification. It poses a serious threat to marine life, the health of ecosystems and the people whose livelihoods depend on the ocean.  When the CO\u00a0<sub>2<\/sub>\u00a0dissolves in seawater, forms carbonic acid (H\u00a0<sub>2<\/sub>\u00a0WHAT\u00a0<sub>3<\/sub> ), releasing hydrogen ions (H+) and increasing the acidity of the oceans. Acidity plays a key role in many biological mechanisms, including calcification.
