Our world is changing dynamically and the impacts of climate change are becoming more frequent, as evidenced by another summer of extreme weather in Europe. At the same time, many industries and jobs are undergoing profound transformation due to rapid development. artificial intelligence (AI) and new technologies.

These global changes bring challenges, but they also create new opportunities as entirely new job roles emerge and existing positions evolve. You don’t have to be a dedicated climate scientist or an AI expert to benefit from these developments. Developing the right mix of skills will help you stay flexible and open up new career opportunities in sustainability throughout your career.

Double transition and changing labor market needs

In recent years, Europe has focused heavily on providing its citizens with skills for the so-called double transition (twin transition), within which they progress green and digital transition hand in hand. As Europe continues its journey towards climate neutrality and seeks to strengthen its resilience to the impacts of climate change, the demand for green skills remains high.

With the rise of AI, digital skills are becoming increasingly important and complex. Innovation will drive the future economy, helping us understand how new technologies work and how to use them responsibly to solve real-world challenges. On the occasion of the UN initiative World Youth Skills Day highlighted the need to combine these green and digital skills – including AI-related skills – with key interpersonal skills that machines cannot replace.

If you want to future-proof your career, succeed in a changing economy, and contribute to a clean transition, Sustainability skills are more important than ever. These skills are essential not only for emerging professions, but will also find wide application across existing sectors.

European Union initiatives and the Skills Union

The European Union is striving to maintain its competitiveness, build resilience to global change and lead the fight against climate change. This requires investing in people to acquire the skills needed for prosperity and the ability to respond to challenges.

Central to this effort is the European initiative Skills Union (Union of Skills), launched in early 2025. It focuses on the most important sectors for the digital and green transitions and for the strategy Clean Industrial Agreement (Clean Industrial Deal), including career paths in the areas STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics).

The initiative is designed to help people find well-paid and meaningful work, learn and adapt, move and work freely across Europe and bring their skills to where they are most needed. In its first year of operation, the Skills Union has created an observatory to forecast skills needs, set up a council to address skills shortages, launched a pilot scheme for workers at risk and opened a new training centre Skills Academy.

These measures directly support businesses in their search for qualified workers, as four out of five businesses they face problems in recruiting employees with the right expertise.

What exactly do sustainability skills mean?

Sustainability skills, often referred to as green skills, represent a set of knowledge, values and practical experiences that drive Europe's clean transition. These skills are important for managing the impacts of climate change, building resilience to future shocks and achieving climate neutrality. Green skills help individuals understand challenges, think critically about solutions, collaborate with others and turn ideas into action.

European framework GreenComp (European sustainability competence framework) helps define these competences and serves as a reference point for education in the field of planetary protection.

These skills include two main categories:

Technical skills: specific knowledge in areas such as sustainable construction, agriculture, resource management, renewable energy, climate technologies and STEM sectors.

Transferable skills: skills in environmental policy, sustainable business practices, civic engagement, climate communication, or behavior change.

The GreenComp framework defines 12 key competencies, which cover critical thinking, problem understanding, adaptability, advocacy for justice, individual initiative, and collective action.

Sustainability skills are no longer reserved for environmental specialists, but are becoming essential for a wide range of new and existing professions. Organizations in business, education, healthcare, construction, and public administration must adapt to remain competitive in the era of climate change and artificial intelligence. For example, an engineer needs green skills to design more energy-efficient products, an urban planner to design community resilience to climate change, and a teacher to explain the importance of sustainability to students. In this sense, green skills are among the the most resilient skills for the future, which will be useful for a number of career paths.

How can the European Climate Pact and the EU Climate Action Academy help you?

Platform EU Climate Action Academy, brought to you by the European Climate Pact, is available to anyone at any level of interest in climate action.
